Boldini arrived in Paris in 1971 following a lucrative stay in London. In Paris, he was quickly
accepted into Parisian high society where he became a portraitist in very high demand. His
flamboyant free flowing style was widely admired through-out Europe. According to the
legendary art historian, Bernard Berenson: "As an expert on society, Boldini perfectly
captured the female elegance of this era" (Berenson, Giomi d'autunno in Romagna,
Pellegrinaggi d'Arte, 1958).
Boldini was also recognized for his talent by Gertrude Stein. As she noted: "Once time has
established values in their correct order, Boldini will be recognized as the greatest painter
of the last century. The New school (of painting) derives from him, as he was the first to
simplify lines and planes" (Vito Doria, Il Genio di Boldini, Bologna, n.d., p. 120)
