Painted 1913.
Note: this work was painted during Nolde's participation on the Kulz-Leber expedition
which was organized by the German Colonial Ministry to investigate standards of health in
German New Guinea. The expedition left Berlin in early autumn 1913, traveled by rail
through Russia and Siberia to Manchuria from whence they sailed to Korea and Japan.
From Japan the expedition sailed across the China Sea and visited Peking (Bejing),
Hankow, Nanking, Shanghai and Hong Kong. From China they proceeded to New Guinea by
way of the Philippines. Nolde made sketches at each stage of the journey, mostly in water
color and pencil.
